- EMC ELICOM will develop a 3MW solar photovoltaic power plant in Nioki Centre under DR Congo’s decentralised electrification programme.
- The project will improve electricity access, support economic activities and reduce dependence on diesel generators.
The EMC ELICOM consortium will build a 3-megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant in Nioki Centre, Maï-Ndombe Province, after securing a contract from the National Agency for Rural and Peri-Urban Electrification (ANSER).
ANSER awarded the contract under its decentralised energy programme as part of efforts to expand electricity access in rural and peri-urban communities across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The agency identified the project as the largest single development in its current electrification programme, reinforcing the government’s commitment to improving energy access in underserved regions.
Nioki Centre plays a vital role in Maï-Ndombe Province’s economy. The town serves as a major transportation and logging hub along the Fimi River and supports commercial activities across the region. However, years of inadequate electricity supply have constrained industrial growth, weakened public service delivery and limited economic opportunities in the area.
Meanwhile, the new solar power plant will deliver reliable electricity to households, businesses and public institutions in Nioki Centre.
The project will also power economic activities such as milling operations, agro-processing businesses and clean water production facilities that require consistent electricity supply.
By improving access to reliable energy, the project will stimulate economic growth, strengthen local businesses and improve living conditions for residents.
The solar facility will replace part of the electricity currently generated by diesel-powered systems, reducing fuel consumption and operating costs for businesses and communities.
The transition to solar energy will also lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental sustainability across the region.
Through the project, ANSER will strengthen renewable energy infrastructure in the DRC, expand access to clean electricity and support sustainable economic development in Maï-Ndombe Province.
The development marks another step in the country’s efforts to deploy decentralised renewable energy solutions and bring reliable power to underserved communities.
