NASENI, REA Sign MoU to Advance Nigeria First Energy Agenda

  • NASENI and REA have signed an MoU to promote locally manufactured renewable energy technologies and reduce dependence on imports.
  • The partnership will support local production and deployment of solar panels, inverters and battery storage systems for rural electrification projects.

The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate local manufacturing and deployment of renewable energy technologies under the Federal Government’s Nigeria First Policy.

The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr Adebowale Adedokun, facilitated the signing ceremony at the BPP headquarters in Abuja. NASENI’s Director of Information, Olusegun Ayeoyinka, disclosed the development in a statement.

Speaking at the event, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, said the agency is connecting research, production and commercialisation to move innovations from laboratories to the marketplace.

Halilu said NASENI will increase the production of renewable energy technologies, including solar panels and solar streetlights, through initiatives such as DefFrontier.

He added that NASENI will supply REA’s renewable energy requirements while strengthening local manufacturing capacity and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported technologies.

“We will scale up renewable energy production, including solar panels and streetlights, through initiatives such as DefFrontier,” Halilu said.

He explained that the agreement will help NASENI domesticate renewable energy technologies, equipment and production processes while expanding off-grid energy access across the country.

REA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abba Aliyu, described the agreement as a strategic partnership that will strengthen Nigeria’s renewable energy ecosystem. Aliyu said NASENI will provide manufacturing capacity and technological expertise, while REA will deploy renewable energy solutions to expand electricity access in rural communities.

He noted that the partnership will create a stronger local value chain for renewable energy equipment and services.

BPP Director-General, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, said the Nigeria First Policy seeks to strengthen local content, deliver value for money and improve accountability in public procurement. He stated that both agencies will implement the agreement through a performance-based framework backed by strict monitoring and measurable outcomes.

Adedokun expressed confidence that the partnership will expand renewable energy access and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported technologies.

NASENI DevFrontier Green Energy FZE and REA’s renewable energy asset management company, RAMco, will implement the agreement.

Under the partnership, REA will procure photovoltaic modules, inverters and energy storage batteries produced by NASENI DevFrontier Green Energy FZE directly or through approved distributors, assemblers and manufacturing partners.

REA will also create opportunities for NASENI to participate in electrification projects, facilitate engagements with developers and contractors under its programmes, and ensure compliance with procurement regulations, local content requirements and transparency standards.

In addition, both organisations will promote standardised, high-quality photovoltaic technologies across REA’s project portfolio to support Nigeria’s clean energy transition and rural electrification goals.
