Nigeria to sell excess supply to West Africa
- WAPP approved the Northcore Power deal
- World Bank funds the deal
Nigeria will sell its excess electricity generated to its West African neighbours in a deal to be executed under the Northcore Power project. The project involves an interconnected 875 kilometre 330 kilovolts transmission line. The World Bank, French Development Council and the African Development Bank will provide funding for the project, which costs $570 million. Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, and Burkina Faso are set to benefit from the project.
Speaking on the development, the Chairman, West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) and Managing Director, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Engr. Sule Abdulaziz said the country would sell its excess capacity through the transmission line to its West African counterparts. ”The power we will be selling is the power that is not needed in Nigeria. These generators that are going to supply power to this transmission line are going to generate that power specifically for this project. So it is unutilised power”, Abdulaziz stated.
The Secretary-General WAPP, Siengui Appolinaire Ki, speaking on the project, said, ”The cost is about $570 million and the country funds the part of the investment in each country, and the donors support them, and Nigeria is taking its own”.
The funding agreement has been approved and currently awaits disbursement.
