Nigeria: GPAL Receives Retrofitted Turbine from GE

  • The third of the three thermal turbines belonging to the geometric power company has been brought back to the country.
  • The plants were sent to the United States for periodic retrofitting.

Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL) has issued a statement highlighting the return of the third of the three turbines sent to the United States for periodic retrofitting. The turbines were sent out in December 2019 for a comprehensive check at the plant of General Electric (GE), the world’s biggest electricity equipment manufacturing group.

The turbines which were installed in Geometric’s plant in Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba, Abia State can generate 47MW each. Despite the total capacity of the Aba Power Project being capped at 141MW, the plant is licensed to produce 181MW. In a statement by Ben Caven, the managing director of GPAL, “If the electricity demand grows beyond the current installed capacity of 141MW, we will just acquire one more 47MW turbine, which will bring our generation to 181MW.”

The three GE turbines have not been used to generate electricity since they were installed for the first time in 2012 due to a dispute with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). Following the resolution of the dispute, Caven stated that Geometric Power found it necessary to return them to the manufacturer (GE) for review prior to their use.
