Petroliam Nasional Bhd, a Malaysian oil and gas company, known as Petronas, has announced that it is setting up a new platform that will provide renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility solutions. The company also announced ambitious goals for each of the workstreams by 2030.
The new platform, Gentaru Sdn Bhd, will expand the clean energy operations of Petronas, formerly run through its New Energy Business. It will take off in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.
Gentari will focus on the supply, distribution and retail of clean energy through a portfolio of renewable energy power plants, mostly solar. The portfolio is planned to be about 30 GW in capacity and $0 Gw at the end 0f the decade. Aside from solar, the portfolio will also include wind and battery storage. The company currently boasts of more than 1 GWp of solar assets in India and Malaysia.
In addition, Gentari envisages supplying up to 1.2 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen every year and will commence with in-country projects. According to the statement, it is already working on a pipeline of projects in Malaysia and “other prioritised markets” with partners and expects to commission the first batch of schemes in 2025.
The company will make use of an existing network of 170 charging stations in India and Malaysia to provide green mobility solutions and will try to gain a 10% market share across key markets in the Asian Pacific.
