Angola Signs PPA for 150MW Quipungo Solar Project

  • Angola signed a PPA for Masdar’s 150MW Quipungo solar project, anchoring the first phase of the 500MW Project Royal Sable.
  • The agreement strengthens grid resilience, boosts investor confidence and supports Angola’s clean energy and economic development goals.

Angola has signed a power purchase agreement for the 150MW Quipungo Solar Photovoltaic project in the south of the country. The agreement secures long-term electricity offtake for the facility.

State-owned Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade signed the PPA during the International Renewable Energy Agency General Assembly at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The Quipungo project is located in Huila Province. It serves as the first contracted phase of Project Royal Sable, a planned 500MW multi-site solar programme. The programme will strengthen Angola’s southern grid and support national renewable energy goals.

Meanwhile, the PPA anchors the first commercial project under Project Royal Sable. The agreement establishes the foundation for future phases across three sites. Once completed, the full programme will create more than 2,000 jobs and supply clean power to about 300,000 households.

RNT Executive Director Mauro Hernany Ferreira Martins signed the agreement. Angola’s Minister of Energy and Water João Baptista Borges, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera attended the ceremony.

Furthermore, La Camera said the agreement demonstrates how national energy strategies can be transformed into bankable projects. He also stated that the Quipungo facility will enhance grid stability and expand access to reliable electricity.

Masdar is developing Project Royal Sable. The Quipungo project represents Masdar’s first power PPA in Angola. CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said Africa’s population and economic growth will depend on affordable and secure energy. He also stated that long-term partnerships can accelerate renewable energy projects and support economic development.

The programme supports Angola’s plan to diversify its energy mix and expand access to affordable electricity through large-scale renewable capacity.
