Egypt Launches National Clean Hydrogen Programme

  • Egypt launches the National Clean Hydrogen Program to accelerate green hydrogen development, focusing on investment readiness, policy support, and project development.
  • The initiative establishes a Hydrogen Centre of Excellence and multi-agency oversight, strengthening capacity and aligning with global clean energy transition efforts.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone has partnered with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to launch the National Clean Hydrogen Program–Egypt, a major initiative to build a competitive green hydrogen economy.

Meanwhile, the programme will strengthen Egypt’s ability to attract investment by supporting project development, policy frameworks, and institutional capacity. It will also conduct pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for priority hydrogen projects while providing technical and regulatory support to stakeholders.

A key component of the initiative is the creation of a Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence at SCZONE headquarters in Ain Sokhna. The centre will promote knowledge-sharing, technical expertise, and innovation to accelerate hydrogen sector growth.

Furthermore, the programme forms part of the broader Global Clean Hydrogen Program, which is implemented by UNIDO and funded by the Global Environment Facility across 10 countries, with Egypt positioned as a key participant.

To ensure effective implementation, stakeholders have established a steering committee comprising SCZONE, UNIDO, the Ministry of Environment Egypt, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy Egypt, and the Ministry of Industry Egypt.

The committee will coordinate closely with the Supreme Council for Green Hydrogen to align the programme with national energy priorities and monitor execution.

Through this initiative, Egypt is strengthening its position as a regional hub for green hydrogen while advancing its broader energy transition and industrial development goals.
