FG, Siemens Launches Training Hub in Abeokuta

  • FG launches the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) facility in Abeokuta to train 6,000 energy professionals.
  • The five-year programme combines technical training and international certification, strengthening local capacity and supporting long-term power sector reforms in Nigeria.

The Federal Ministry of Power has inaugurated the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) training facility in Abeokuta under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI). The programme aims to train at least 6,000 energy professionals over five years to strengthen technical capacity in Nigeria’s power sector.

Samaila Nasiru described the inauguration as a major commitment to the future of Nigeria’s energy sector. He explained that the Presidential Power Initiative focuses on modernising and expanding national power infrastructure.

Nasiru noted that the Federal Government, through the FGN Power Company and its partners, has already made significant investments in grid transmission and distribution under Phase One of the initiative. However, he stressed that infrastructure alone cannot solve the sector’s challenges without deliberate investment in human capital.

He said the SEED programme reflects the government’s commitment to building a highly skilled workforce capable of operating, maintaining, and optimising modern power systems. According to him, collaboration with institutions such as Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency will enable participants to obtain internationally recognised certifications.

Speaking at the event, Kenny Anuwe described the initiative as a strategic investment in human capital development. He said the programme aligns with the broader goals of the Presidential Power Initiative to modernise and expand Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

Anuwe explained that sustainable growth in the power sector depends on professionals who can efficiently operate and maintain transmission and distribution systems nationwide. He added that the programme would also strengthen local content development by embedding technical expertise within Nigeria’s workforce and institutions.

The training will take place across several locations, including Abeokuta, Offa, Ibadan, Ayede, Birnin Kebbi, and Sokoto. The programme will also involve partnerships with organisations such as ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency. This is to support internationally recognised certification and employability across the ECOWAS region.

Sheu Suleman said the initiative supports the Federal Government’s efforts to reform and reset the power sector. He noted that the programme would address technical losses while promoting technology transfer and workforce development.

In addition, Markus Wagner said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader power sector reform agenda. He added that key institutions are working to integrate industry-approved standards and quality assurance measures into the training programmes.

Development partners supporting the initiative include the European Union, the Germany government, Siemens Energy, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit.
