- Lagos State launches a technical committee to scale commercial biogas and biomethane production, using organic waste to reduce fuel imports.
- The state expands its clean transport programme across buses, trucks, rail, and e-mobility systems, cutting emissions.
Lagos State has inaugurated a technical committee to drive the commercial production of biogas and biomethane as part of its clean energy transition strategy. Oluwaseun Osiyemi announced the initiative during a ministerial briefing in Lagos. He stated that the committee brings together multiple ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure coordinated implementation.
The state government designed the programme to reduce dependence on imported fuel and convert organic waste into usable energy. Lagos generates about 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, and officials estimate that 45% of this waste is organic and suitable for biomethane production. The state expects local fuel production at lower costs while reducing environmental pressure.
Osiyemi explained that feasibility studies already confirmed the commercial viability of biogas and biomethane as alternatives to diesel. He added that the new committee will accelerate full-scale production across the state and support energy diversification.
In addition, Lagos State expanded its clean transport reforms under its broader sustainability agenda. The government converted 152 First and Last Mile buses from petrol to compressed natural gas (CNG). This ia also while transitioning parts of its bus operations to electricity, biogas, and CNG systems.
The state deployed CNG buses that have transported over 600,000 passengers since 2022, reducing fuel costs by nearly 50%. Furthermore, two electric buses on Bus Rapid Transit corridors completed a 90-day pilot. It carried over 150,000 passengers and preventing about 200,000 kilogrammes of carbon emissions.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu also introduced 2,000 CNG-powered trucks under the state’s haulage reform programme to improve road safety and reduce emissions in logistics operations.
Beyond road transport, Lagos continues to advance its seven-line electric rail project and promote multimodal transport integration. The state also supports innovation in water transport and e-mobility through initiatives such as EcoMove Lagos and the E1 Sport Series.
Osiyemi confirmed that all these reforms align with the THEMES+ development agenda, which prioritises clean transport, emission reduction, and improved urban mobility across Lagos State.
