Morocco Expands Clean Energy Share to Nearly 40%

  • Morocco expanded its renewable energy capacity by 192 MW in 2025, reaching 4,851 MW and maintaining its position as a leading clean energy market in North Africa.
  • Solar and wind drove all new growth, increasing renewables’ share of total installed capacity to 39.6%, the highest in the region.

Morocco increased its renewable energy capacity by 192 megawatts in 2025, bringing total installed renewables to 4,851 MW, up from 4,659 MW in 2024. Data from International Renewable Energy Agency shows that solar and wind accounted for all new additions. Morocco ranked as the second-largest renewable energy market in North Africa in 2025.

Solar energy capacity rose to 1,086 MW. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems drove this growth, adding 135 MW to reach 546 MW. Meanwhile, concentrated solar power (CSP) remained steady at 540 MW. Onshore wind capacity increased by 57 MW to 2,452 MW.

In contrast, other renewable sources showed no change. Hydropower remained at 1,306 MW, while bioenergy stayed at 7 MW. Morocco also maintained 814 MW of pumped hydro storage capacity, making it the only North African country with this technology.

Renewable energy’s share of Morocco’s total installed power capacity increased from 38.7% in 2024 to 39.6% in 2025. This rise gives the country the highest renewable energy share in North Africa, reinforcing its leadership in the region’s energy transition.
