Nigeria’s Crude Oil Production Rises To 1.8 million bpd

  • Nigeria’s crude oil production has risen to 1.821 million barrels per day, including condensates.
  • NNPC links the increase to improved regulations, upstream activities and a better operating environment.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) said Nigeria’s crude oil production rose to 1.821 million barrels per day (bpd), including condensates, over the past month.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari disclosed the figure at the 2026 Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) Conference in Lagos. Chief Communications Officer Andy Odeh represented Ojulari at the event.

Ojulari attributed the production increase to improved regulations and increased upstream activities. He said the measures have improved the operating environment and accelerated activities across the sector.

“Today, we are doing 1.821 million barrels per day,” Ojulari said. “The country has recorded more than 80 per cent success in its efforts to improve production.”

The conference, themed “Access To Assets: Empowering Players & Driving Growth,” focused on measures to expand investment and strengthen Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

The latest production figure follows comments from the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, who linked the increase to stronger collaboration between government and industry stakeholders.

Lokpobiri also pointed to efforts to remove investment bottlenecks and increase drilling activities. He said active oil rigs have risen from fewer than 10 when the current administration assumed office to more than 70.

According to the minister, sustained drilling remains critical to increasing production and achieving Nigeria’s target of about three million bpd.

He also stressed the need for an enabling investment environment and the issuance of licences to investors with the required financial and technical capacity.

Nigeria’s crude oil and condensate production stood at 1.678 million bpd in August 2026, according to data cited by Channels Television. The figure represented a 0.4 per cent increase from July.

The latest production increase strengthens Nigeria’s efforts to expand upstream output and attract fresh investment into the petroleum sector.
