Ukraine Strikes Two Russian Oil Refineries Overnight

  • Ukraine has targeted two Russian oil refineries in Krasnodar and Yaroslavl as part of its campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure.
  • The attack triggered a fire at the Slavyansk refinery, leaving one person dead and another injured.

Ukraine has struck two Russian oil refineries in the Krasnodar and Yaroslavl regions, intensifying its drone campaign against Russia’s fuel infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the overnight attacks on Sunday, June 28, saying Ukraine would continue operations aimed at weakening Russia’s capacity to sustain the war. “We continue our operations that weaken Russia’s ability to wage this war,” Zelenskyy said.

He noted that the targeted refineries lie approximately 300 kilometres and 700 kilometres from Ukrainian territory. The attacks form part of Ukraine’s broader strategy of targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure with long-range drones.

The campaign has disrupted fuel supplies in several parts of Russia, causing shortages, long queues and fuel rationing at some petrol stations.

In Russia’s Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratiev confirmed that a fire broke out at the Slavyansk-na-Kubani oil refinery following the attack. The incident killed one person and injured another in a nearby village, according to regional authorities.

Emergency services later extinguished the fire and reopened nearby roads after completing response operations.

The Slavyansk refinery, a privately owned facility with a processing capacity of approximately 100,000 barrels of oil per day, supplies petroleum products to both domestic and export markets.

Authorities in the Yaroslavl region also confirmed a drone attack.

Regional officials imposed temporary restrictions on movement along some roads leading to Moscow while security services responded to the incident. The latest strikes highlight the growing role of energy infrastructure in the conflict as both sides increasingly target facilities that support fuel supply, logistics and industrial operations.

Ukraine has expanded its use of domestically produced long-range drones to strike strategic military and energy assets deep inside Russian territory, increasing pressure on one of the world’s largest oil-producing countries.
