Zambia Approves Licences, Signals Confidence in Clean Energy

  • Zambia’s Energy Regulation Board approved 24 energy licences and seven construction permits to boost service delivery and attract private investment.
  • Approvals cover $56.3m in renewable energy, 80 petroleum tankers, and new service stations, supporting sector growth and diversification.

Zambia’s Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 24 licences and seven construction permits to enhance energy service delivery nationwide. According to ERB spokesperson Namukolo Kasumpa, these approvals reflect growing investor confidence and demonstrate the effectiveness of Zambia’s regulatory framework in attracting compliant and sustainable energy investments.

Among the licences, nine target the manufacture, supply, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy equipment. These projects represent investment commitments exceeding 1.1 billion Kwacha (approximately $56.3 million), highlighting continued interest in Zambia’s expanding clean energy market. Additionally, the ERB has licensed 80 petroleum fuel tankers to strengthen the national fuel supply chain and improve distribution capacity.

Furthermore, the regulator granted seven construction permits for new retail service stations, while four stations have already been commissioned. Over the past two decades, Zambia has progressively liberalised its energy sector, allowing private players to participate in electricity generation, fuel distribution, and renewable energy development.

These reforms aim to increase competition, expand investment, and reduce reliance on state-owned utilities. With the latest approvals, Zambia continues to diversify its energy mix, address supply constraints, and attract capital for both petroleum and renewable energy infrastructure.
