Iberdrola Italia has built a new 33-megawatt (MW) solar plant in Tarquinia, north of Rome. This is the company’s third photovoltaic project in Italy.
The plant uses around 50,000 solar panels. It generates about 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually to power 18,000 households.
Iberdrola estimates the project will cut more than 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The plant supports Italy’s efforts to expand clean energy and electrify its industries.
Valerio Faccenda, Country Manager of Iberdrola Italia, said the company wants to drive a low-emission future and noted that the project helps reduce fossil fuel dependence.
The project includes more than just solar infrastructure. Iberdrola planted a 1,350-tree olive grove on the site. The company aims to generate extra income for the local community through this agricultural addition.
Iberdrola also designed the olive grove to blend the facility with the natural landscape. The company hopes to support green energy and local farming through this dual-use approach.
The inauguration took place in Tarquinia. Valerio Faccenda, Mayor Enrico Leoni, and Spain’s Ambassador to Italy, Miguel Fernández-Palacios, attended the event.
The company did not reveal how much it invested in the project.
