Spanish group TSK has won the contract to construct the Cuamba solar power plant in the Niassa province of Mozambique. The 20 MWp project, which is being developed by British independent power producer (IPP) Globeleq, will be fitted with a 1.86 MVA/7.42 MW/h lithium battery storage system.

It is expected that when completed, the battery storage system will stabilise the state-owned grid with a constant injection of electricity. TSK intends to construct a 400m power line to connect the plant and storage system to the national grid. Under the agreement with Globeleq, TSK will operate and maintain the facility for five years after the commissioning.
Globeleq has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the state utility company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). The company is developing the project in collaboration with US-based private equity firm Source Capital. Globeleq estimates that the 20 MWp solar plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 630,000 tonnes over the 25-year lifetime of the plant.
Globeleq is also looking to deploy build more solar power plants in Mozambique. The company has been selected as a pre-qualified developer for the proposed 40MWp Dondo solar photovoltaic plant in the province of Sofala. Globeleq intends to partner with France based Akuo Energy in the development of this other project.
