NAWEC Set To Electrify 46 Villages in Sami The Gambia

  • NAWEC is set to electrify 46 villages in the Sami and Sami Districts in the Gambia.
  • Commissioning of the project is expected around March 2023.

According to the project coordinator for GERMP, Haddy Njie, the Gambia National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) under the sub-component of The Gambia Energy Restoration and Modernisation Project (GERMP) is set to electrify 46 villages in the Sami and Sami District starting with LaminKoto Diabu in 2023.

” We will be electrifying about 46 villages in the Sami District. As of now, progress is going in Laminkoto Diabuku because the installation has started, and we are expecting the commissioning of the project to be around March 2023,” she said.

She also highlights that phase two would deal with the Upper River Region North and South and some parts of the North Bank Region.

The objective of the GERMP is to upgrade the Gambia’s transmission and dissemination network from 33kV to 225kV. This is the first time that NAWEC is implementing its high voltage. Jabang is the centre of activities where the main switch is located for the 225kV.
