Telecoms provider Orange intends to reduce its carbon footprint via the utilisation of 100 per cent renewable energy in its operations by 2040. The company unveiled its strategy to achieve carbon neutrality in Abidjan recently. The company plans to increase renewable energy utilisation in its operations in Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Liberia to 50 per cent by 2025 from the current 24 per cent.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the company has partnered with the Canadian company NuRAN Wireless to build 2,000 solar PV powered telecommunication towers. The network will provide telecommunications to around 10 million people in rural areas. Orange also intends to provide electricity to rural areas in the region via Orange Energie, which will allow rural consumers to purchase and install solar kits.
The Ivory Coast subsidiary of Orange also plans to reduce its plastic use. In Liberia, the company has launched a “Game of Change” initiative that focuses on collecting plastic waste and recycling them into sports equipment.
