Karpowership to appeal the decision
- Department of Environment denies Karpowership environmental permit
The Turkish company, Karpowership has said they will review the Department of Environment’s decision on its application for an environmental permit. Karpowership was the winning bidder for South Africa’s emergency 2000MW project under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme. The refusal to grant the environmental permit to Karpowership comes as the company is expected to dock three ships at the Ports of Coega, Saldanha and Richards Bay.
The company says it will review the decision in the next twenty days and file its appeal. A spokesperson for the Karpowership, Kay Sexwale, said, ”The ships are engineered to have minimal impact on their surroundings, and they operate successfully in eleven countries. We believe that we fall within the legal limits of South African laws on all fronts. As for the noise underwater study, the protocol speaks of available information. We must stress that there are no existing power ships docked in any of SA’s harbours and no such technology exists in the Republic”.
Karpowership believes it has met the requirements hence, its disagreement with the decision of the Department of Environment.
